Six Character Studies for Solo Bassoon
Études for the Bassoon Virtuoso is a collection of six character studies for solo bassoon, each exploring a distinct musical personality through color, rhythm, lyricism, and virtuosity. While rooted in the tradition of the concert étude, I conceived these pieces not only as technical challenges, but as miniature musical worlds with their own dramatic identity and atmosphere.
Some lean into humor and unpredictability, others into momentum, elegance, or instability. From the sinewy motion of Sidewinder to the precarious balance of Thin Ice, each étude invites the performer to move beyond mechanics and into storytelling, imagination, and character.
As both a performer and composer, I’ve always been fascinated by the overlap between technical craft and expressive freedom. These études reflect my belief that virtuosity is most compelling when it serves communication, personality, and musical narrative.
